“The Moving City” illustrates a study approach inspired by landscape ecology, and is aimed at investigating the kinetic and self-organizing characteristics of contemporary cities. Concepts and theories raise many issues, which are immediately dealt with through a practical application: a survey of the dynamics of mobility in the metropolitan area of Central Tuscany. In particular, methods and results that are interpreted in this book involve the research and experimentation of a monitoring technique of urban dynamics based on mobile telecommunications technologies. Our goal is to show how Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) represent an opportunity for gathering information on the functioning of vast territorial systems through the processing of real-time statistical data, and how they can be utilized in order to improve our ability to plan and manage urban systems.
